The application of nuclear technology is also a strategic emerging industry that has developed rapidly in recent years. The application of nuclear technology is related to nearly one-third of the 43 sub-sectors in the manufacturing sector of the national economy. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has pointed out that isotopes and radiation technologies are making valuable contributions to the socio-economic development of the world. In terms of the breadth of applications, only modern electronics and information technology can be compared with isotopes and radiation technologies.
It is understood that more than 150 countries in the world have conducted research on the application of nuclear technology. The application of nuclear technology has formed a huge industrial chain in developed countries. The annual output value of the US nuclear technology application industry accounts for about 4% to 5% of the total output value of the national economy, and the corresponding proportions in Japan and Europe are 2% to 3%. The size of the nuclear technology industry in the world exceeds one trillion US dollars.
The annual output value of the domestic nuclear technology application industry has reached 100 billion yuan in 2010, accounting for 0.3% of the GDP of that year, and by 2015, the relevant output value has reached 300 billion yuan, accounting for 0.4% of the GDP of that year. Compared with developed countries and regions such as the United States, Europe, and Japan, China's nuclear technology application industry still has much room for development, and it is expected to reach a trillion-level market in the future. The domestic nuclear technology application market is still in its growth stage, and it is relatively mature only in the fields of material modification and radiation sterilization. At present, material modification has generated 100 billion market space. In the future, as nuclear technology applications in new fields such as medicine, environmental protection, printing, automotive, and radiation curing mature, the nuclear technology industry will enter a broader development area.
